Madras HC quashes FIR against Badri Seshadri

In a significant legal development, the Madras High Court has quashed the First Information Report (FIR) filed against renowned political commentator and publisher, Badri Seshadri. The case stemmed from his criticism of the Chief Justice of India (CJI) regarding the handling of the Manipur violence case. Badri Seshadri had petitioned the Madras High Court, seeking the dismissal of the FIR registered against him at the Perambalur police station. Justice N Anand Venkatesh, presiding over the case, granted relief to the petitioner, marking a victory for freedom of expression and speech. The incident dates back to July 29 when Badri Seshadri was arrested at his residence in Chennai by the Perambalur police. The arrest was in connection with comments he had made on a social media platform, wherein he criticized the CJI and the Supreme Court for their handling of the Manipur violence case. This arrest sparked a debate on the limits of free speech and the right to criticise the judiciary in a democratic society.
