Annamalai criticises DMK govt over EB tariff hike

In a scathing critique of the ruling DMK government in Tamil Nadu, the state’s Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) president, K Annamalai, lashed out at Chief Minister M K Stalin for what he termed an ill-informed decision to increase electricity tariffs. Annamalai accused the Chief Minister of being out of touch with the realities faced by the people of Tamil Nadu.
The BJP leader’s criticism came in response to a recent hike in electricity tariffs imposed by the government. Annamalai expressed his concerns, particularly regarding the impact on Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs), which have been struggling to recover from economic challenges. He stated, “After placing a heavy burden on MSMEs, the chief minister MK Stalin, who is looking at the slip written by someone, compared the Dollar City into Dull City.”
Annamalai pointed out that the increase in electricity tariffs was initially initiated by the then Electricity Board (EB) Minister V Senthil Balaji and has since burdened consumers. The BJP leader did not mince words when condemning the DMK government, alleging betrayal of both MSMEs and other consumers through an up to 50 percent increase in EB tariffs, a staggering 430 percent increase in the standing charge, and a 15 percent hike in peak-hour charges.
Furthermore, Annamalai criticized Chief Minister Stalin’s apparent detachment from the ground realities in the state. He questioned the Chief Minister’s understanding of the situation in Tamil Nadu and his awareness of the impending protest by MSMEs scheduled for Monday, September 25. Annamalai wondered aloud, “Is there no one in the DMK to take the situation of the state to the chief minister?”
The BJP leader’s strong condemnation of the DMK government’s decision to raise electricity tariffs highlights the ongoing debate over the economic implications of such policies. The concerns raised by Annamalai reflect the broader discourse on the balance between providing essential services and the financial strain it places on both businesses and individuals.
As Tamil Nadu grapples with the economic challenges brought on by the COVID-19 pandemic and other factors, the electricity tariff hike has become a contentious issue. The criticisms from K Annamalai and the BJP underscore the need for policymakers to carefully consider the impact of such decisions on the state’s economy and its citizens.
