TNPCB’s advisory on bursting crackers

Tamil Nadu Pollution Control Board (TNPCB) has issued a crucial advisory for residents to celebrate Diwali while keeping in mind the environment and public health. The advisory aligns with a Supreme Court order and the state government’s regulations, allowing the bursting of firecrackers for only two hours during the day.
The TNPCB’s advisory specifies that residents should limit their firecracker use to a two-hour window, from 6 am to 7 am and from 7 pm to 8 pm. This restricted timeframe is intended to minimize the impact of air and noise pollution on the environment and public well-being.
In addition to the time restrictions, the board has provided a set of dos and don’ts for a safe and responsible Diwali celebration. These guidelines include the recommendation to use firecrackers that produce minimal air and noise pollution and to do so in designated areas with the permission of the district administration or local authorities.
The TNPCB has also cautioned against the use of series firecrackers, commonly known as “sara vedi,” and urged residents to avoid lighting them. These types of firecrackers are known for their loud and continuous explosions, contributing significantly to noise pollution.
To further ensure a safe and environmentally conscious celebration, the advisory advises people to refrain from bursting firecrackers in close proximity to hospitals, schools, courts, places of worship, huts, and areas prone to fires. This consideration is essential to safeguard public safety and minimize disturbances to vital institutions and sensitive locations.
