Chief Minister M K Stalin has given the nod for the implementation of 230 civic amenity projects across urban areas in Tamil Nadu. These initiatives, valued at Rs 929 crore, fall under the ambit of the Atal Mission for Rejuvenation and Urban Transformation (AMRUT) 2.0 scheme. The comprehensive set of projects is poised to address key aspects of urban development, including the provision of basic amenities. A notable allocation of Rs 330.12 crore has been earmarked for the establishment of a 24×7 water supply system in select pilot water zones. The beneficiaries of this water supply initiative include municipalities and corporations in Karaikudi, Rajapalayam, Vellore, Tirunelveli, Thoothukudi, Nagercoil, Trichy, Tambaram, Cuddalore, Erode, Avadi, and Dindigul. Among the sanctioned projects, special emphasis has been placed on crucial infrastructure components. Underground drainage systems in overlooked areas of Karaikudi municipality (Rs 33.71 crore) and Madurai Corporation (Rs 452.42 crore) have been greenlighted, ensuring a comprehensive approach to sanitation and waste management. Additionally, the restoration of water bodies in various municipalities and corporations, with an allocation of Rs 11.07 crore, underscores the commitment to environmental conservation. The Chief Minister’s approval of these projects signifies a strategic step towards achieving self-sufficiency in meeting drinking water requirements, implementing effective sewage treatment, and fostering the sustainable development of water bodies in select cities and towns across the state. The AMRUT 2.0 scheme, a collaborative effort funded by the Union and State governments along with relevant local bodies, is designed to address critical aspects of urban living. This includes piped drinking water supply to homes, robust solid waste management systems, comprehensive underground drainage networks, efficient water recycling mechanisms, and the preservation of water bodies in urban areas. @@@
