Death count in Kallakurichi hooch tragedy rises to 35, CB-CID inquiry ordered


The death toll in the Kallakurichi hooch tragedy surged to 35 on Thursday, with many more individuals hospitalized after consuming illicit liquor laced with methanol. This incident marks one of the deadliest cases of methanol poisoning in recent times in Tamil Nadu.

Tamil Nadu Chief Minister MK Stalin expressed his shock and sorrow over the tragic incident and announced a CID inquiry to investigate the matter thoroughly. In a statement posted on X, CM Stalin said, “I am shocked and saddened to hear the news of the deaths of people who had consumed adulterated liquor in Kallakurichi. Those involved in the crime have been arrested in this matter. Action has also been taken against the officials who failed to prevent it. Immediate action will be taken if the public informs about those involved in the crimes. Such incidents that ruin society will be dealt with an iron fist.”

Following the tragedy, authorities have arrested several individuals, including a man identified as K. Kannukutti, who is alleged to have sold the tainted arrack. Additionally, the government has taken disciplinary actions against local officials whose negligence contributed to the incident. This includes suspensions and transfers of officials in the Kallakurichi district.

The tragedy has overwhelmed local healthcare facilities. Many victims in critical condition were rushed to Jawaharlal Institute of Postgraduate Medical Education & Research (JIPMER) in Puducherry and the government hospital in Salem for advanced medical care. Despite the efforts of medical personnel, the death toll continues to rise, with numerous individuals still battling for their lives.
