Washington, July 24: U.S. Vice President Kamala Harris is set to meet Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu at the White House this week, pressing him to end the ongoing conflict in Gaza. Harris aims to advocate for a resolution that ensures Israel’s security, secures the release of all hostages, and alleviates the suffering of Palestinian civilians in Gaza.
An aide to the Vice President stated, “We anticipate the Vice President will convey her view that it is time for the war to end in a way where Israel is secure, all hostages are released, the suffering of Palestinian civilians in Gaza ends, and the Palestinian people can enjoy their right to dignity, freedom, and self-determination.”
Despite the high-profile meeting, Harris will not be able to preside over Netanyahu’s address to a joint session of Congress on July 24 due to a pre-scheduled event in Indianapolis. This decision has drawn criticism from House Speaker Mike Johnson, who accused Harris of neglecting her duties.
Harris’ aides, however, defended her commitment to Israel, highlighting her ongoing engagement with Israeli officials since the conflict’s escalation. “Her travel to Indianapolis on July 24 should not be interpreted as a change in her position with regard to Israel,” an aide clarified.
Throughout her career, Harris has maintained a strong stance on Israel’s security, condemning Hamas’ attacks and supporting Israel’s right to defend itself. In her upcoming meeting with Netanyahu, she is expected to reaffirm these positions while addressing the humanitarian crisis in Gaza.
This meeting marks Harris’ first major diplomatic challenge as the presumptive Democratic presidential nominee, spotlighting her stance on one of the most contentious issues in U.S. foreign policy.
