Paris, Aug 1: In a triumphant day for Indian badminton at the Paris Olympics, PV Sindhu and Lakshya Sen secured their spots in the pre-quarterfinals of the singles events with decisive victories.Sindhu, chasing her third Olympic medal, dominated Estonia’s Kristin Kuuba in her final Group M match, winning 21-5, 21-10. “It was important for me to top the group,” said Sindhu, reflecting on her performance. She now anticipates a challenging match against China’s He Bingjiao, whom she defeated on her way to a bronze in the Tokyo Games.
In the men’s singles, Lakshya Sen delivered an impressive performance against Indonesia’s world number 4, Jonatan Christie. Sen, currently ranked 22nd in the world, won 21-18, 21-12. “I think it was a tough match today, happy with the way I played,” Sen remarked. He is expected to face fellow Indian HS Prannoy in the next round.
The matches showcased the strategic acumen and physical prowess of both Indian athletes. Sindhu swiftly overcame Kuuba, finishing the match in 33 minutes. Kuuba, ranked 73rd, offered some resistance in the second game but was ultimately outclassed by Sindhu.
Sen, meanwhile, demonstrated his tactical maturity by targeting Christie’s weak forehand and maintaining a high tempo. Despite an early lead by Christie, Sen’s persistent and aggressive play turned the game in his favor, allowing him to secure the win with ease.
