Gripping show

Pechi takes audiences on a thrilling weekend adventure that delves into the supernatural. Set in the haunting Kollimalai hills, the film follows five young trekkers and their guide as they inadvertently enter a restricted area of the Aranmanai Forest, home to a malevolent spirit.
From the outset, Pechi captivates with its striking visuals and immersive atmosphere. The story centers on Meena (Gayathrie Shankar), Charan (Dev), Charu (Preeti), Jerry (Mageshwaran), and Sethu (Jana), who, despite warnings from their guide Maari (Bala Saravanan), venture into the forbidden part of the forest. The tension is palpable as Maari’s warnings are dismissed, leading the group to discover an old house and a voodoo doll, awakening the spirit of Pechi (Seeniammal).
The film excels in creating an eerie ambiance with its dense, hilly forest setting, which effectively enhances the horror elements. The use of doppelgangers, unexplained phenomena, and unsettling noises adds to the chilling experience. Director’s choice of location contributes significantly to the film’s atmosphere, making the forest feel like a character in its own right.
However, Pechi does have its shortcomings. The backstory of Pechi, while intriguing, lacks clarity, which might leave viewers wanting more context. Despite this, the film manages to offer a fresh perspective on the supernatural genre, steering clear of conventional horror clichés.
Performances are a highlight, with Gayathrie Shankar delivering a standout portrayal in her well-developed role. Bala Saravanan impresses with his nuanced performance, showcasing his versatility beyond his usual comedic roles. The supporting cast also contributes convincingly to the narrative.
Technically, Pechi shines with Parthiban’s exceptional camerawork, which captures the forest’s haunting beauty, and Kumar Gangappan’s art direction that adds authenticity to the setting.
In summary, while Pechi may not fully deliver a coherent supernatural narrative, it remains an engaging watch for horror enthusiasts. Its unique approach to horror and strong performances make it a noteworthy entry in the genre.
