In a major urban rejuvenation initiative, the Greater Chennai Corporation has proposed a ₹45 crore eco-park project to transform a neglected stretch of the Buckingham Canal between Kasturba Nagar and Thiruvanmiyur into a vibrant green space. The project aims to create a continuous urban green corridor that blends recreation, mobility, and environmental restoration.
Once completed, the stretch will feature dedicated walking paths, cycling tracks, children’s play areas, and public seating spaces, making it an attractive destination for both residents and visitors. A key highlight of the initiative is the development of dense Miyawaki forests along the canal banks. These fast-growing urban forests are expected to improve air quality, reduce heat levels, and enhance biodiversity. Officials said native tree species will be planted to restore ecological balance in the area. The Buckingham Canal, originally constructed during the British era, once served as an important inland waterway linking parts of Tamil Nadu and Andhra Pradesh for trade and transport.
Over the years, however, it has suffered due to encroachments, pollution, and neglect, and now largely functions as a drainage channel in the city. Through this redevelopment, authorities aim not only to beautify the canal but also to revive its environmental significance. The project includes modern stormwater management systems to improve drainage and help mitigate flooding in low-lying areas. In addition, the proposed green corridor is expected to promote healthier lifestyles by encouraging walking and cycling, while also enhancing connectivity in areas near MRTS railway stations. Overall, the eco-park project marks a significant step towards sustainable urban development in Chennai, transforming an underutilised waterway into a cleaner, greener, and more accessible public space.
