Houston, July 4:

Switzerland delivered a composed and clinical performance to defeat Algeria 2–0 in the FIFA World Cup 2026 Round of 32, booking their place in the Round of 16 and ending a decades-long wait for a knockout-stage victory. The Swiss side took control early in the match and never allowed Algeria to settle, showcasing both attacking efficiency and defensive discipline.

The breakthrough came in the 10th minute when young midfielder Johan Manzambi produced a dazzling run before setting up Breel Embolo for the opening goal. The early strike set the tone for Switzerland, who dominated possession phases and dictated the tempo through experienced midfielders like Granit Xhaka and Remo Freuler. Algeria attempted to respond but struggled to break through a well-organised Swiss defence.

Switzerland doubled their lead almost immediately after the restart, with Dan Ndoye capitalising on a defensive lapse to make it 2–0. From that point, the European side remained in complete control, managing the game effectively while limiting Algeria’s attacking opportunities. Despite making changes and pushing forward, Algeria failed to convert their chances, managing only a few efforts on target.

The match once again highlighted the rise of Johan Manzambi, who has emerged as one of the breakout stars of the tournament. The 20-year-old midfielder played a crucial role not just in attack but also in maintaining balance across the pitch, earning praise for his composure and versatility in his first World Cup campaign.

With this victory, Switzerland advance to the Round of 16, where they will face the winner of the Colombia vs Ghana clash. More importantly, the win marks a historic milestone, as Switzerland secured their first World Cup knockout victory in nearly nine decades, signalling a new chapter for the team on football’s biggest stage.
