Chennai: I did my duty abiding by law and without fearing anyone, said Justice Indira Banerjee, newly elevated as Supreme Court judge from being the Madras High Court Chief Justice.
Speaking at the farewell party this evening, however, she said she felt bad about not being able to give judgement in a few cases.
She further said a court is like a temple for her. I have never asked for any personal tenure during my period.
When Chief Minister Edappadi K  Palaniswami  met me and congratulated me on my elevation, I asked him to ensure that the works at Madras High Court should not be delayed at any cost, she elaborated.
She said Madras High Court is the best, compared to other places, and added Tamilnadu has a rich heritage.
Indira Banerjee will be only the eighth woman judge the Supreme Court has ever had.
She was appointed judge of the Calcutta High Court 5 February 2002 and was transferred to Delhi High Court 8 August 2016. She was elevated as Chief Justice of the Madras High Court 5 April 2017.
Justice Vijaya Kamalesh Tahilramani, who is at present serving as a judge in Bombay High Court, will replace Indira in the Madras High Court.
Vijaya Kamalesh was first appointed as judge 26 June 2001. She enrolled in the Bar Council in 1982.
