Chennai: Two commuters crossing the tracks at Chetpet railway station were hit by a train and died on the spot this morning.
The victims have been identified as Munivel (26), a resident of Kilpauk, and Kishore Kumar (28) from Sashtri Nagar.
Eye-witnesses say that they were crossing the railway tracks at 8 am to reach the other platform when they were hit by a train going from Beach to Tambaram.
People at the station had reportedly tried to warn them when the train was nearing, but it was too late.
Railway Police sources say that they are investigating the case by collecting CCTV footages from the station.
Questions are also being raised as to why the commuters resorted to cross the tracks instead of taking the foot-overbridge, and why the authorities did not stop them.
The bodies have been sent to Kilpauk Government Hospital for post-mortem.
