Chennai: Rains, which made a powerful return Wednesday, are turning out fierce over time. Ennore took the spotlight last night recording 13 cm intense showers, highest in Tamilnadu.

Met department said the cyclone over Arabian Sea will take shape in two more days thereby showering both Tamilnadu and Puducherry in the process.

It has been given the name Luban. That’s not all, officials have also cracked that a new low pressure area is in the making over our bay citing the vigorous monsoon winds.

“Southwest monsoon winds are vigorous over Tamilnadu. A new low pressure area is likely to form over Southwest Bay of Bengal Monday. Also, yesterday’s cyclonic circulation over Southeast Arabian sea is existing. Under its influence, a low pressure area is very likely to form over Southeast Arabian sea today which might concentrate into a depression and move Northwest-wards during subsequent 36 hours thereby intensifying further into a cyclonic storm and moving towards Oman coast,” said a Met official.

“In wake of this, heavy to very heavy rain and thunderstorm with lightning is likely to occur at isolated places over Tamilnadu and Puducherry for the next three days. In Chennai, sky condition is likely to be generally cloudy. Light to moderate rain or thundershower is likely to occur in some areas. In the last 24 hours, Ennore recorded a maximum rainfall of 13 cm followed by Chengalpattu which recorded 12 cm. Cholavaram recorded 9 cm, Marakkanam, Vanur, Ponneri, 8 cm each, Palani, Tindivanam, Nagercoil, Palayamkottai, Madavaram, and Anaikaranchatram, 7 cm each. In addition, rains lashed many other parts of Tamilnadu including Chennai,”he added.

Chief Minister Edappadi K Palaniswami chaired a high-level meeting with the officials at the Secretariat here today to get to know about the flood-preparedness activities undertaken for far in the State in wake of the red alert issued by the Met department.

During the meeting, Officials explained the precatuionary measures put in place in various districts to meet the situation, including setting up of relief centres to people evacuated from low lying areas.

The CM will also be meeting Governor Banwarilal Purohit today evening to submit report about the work done. It is learnt rescue teams have been kept ready at important places.

As per INCOIS bulletin, High Ocean State associated with the low pressure system/depression in the open ocean (off South Tamilnadu) would occur.

Following this waves with maximum heights in the range of three to four meters were forecast from 1230 pm tomorrow till 11.30 pm of Sunday. Till 8 October, fishermen over the South Kerala coast, Lakshadweep, Comorin area, Southeast Arabian sea and Central Arabian sea, were advised not to venture into the sea.

Meanwhile, schools were declared holiday today in Chennai, Kanchipuram, Thiruvallur and few more districts.

WHAT’S IN A NAME

As the upcoming cyclone will be moving towards Oman, it has been named Luban by that country as per the naming convention of systems in Indian Ocean. Luban means Pine tree and also denotes long neck.
