Chennai: After days of information, Southwest Monsoon winds have finally withdrawn from the country according to Met Department which has now said that Northeast Monsoon winds which are primary givers of rainfall to Chennai and rest Tamilnadu are just three days away from striking our coats and bring in heavy rainfall. In addition, the department has also informed that with conditions becoming favourable, thunderstorms can be expected in the next 24 hours at isolated places.
A Met official, said, ‘Southwest Monsoon has withdrawn from the entire country yesterday and Northeast monsoon rains is likely to commence over Tamilnadu by Friday. A low pressure area is existing over North Andaman Sea.
It is likely to become more marked during next the 24 hours. Also, a cyclonic circulation is existing over Southwest Bay of Bengal off Tamilnadu and Srilanka coast. In wake of these conditions, thunderstorm with lightning is likely to occur at isolated places over Tamilnadu and Puducherry in the next 24 hours.’
‘In the last 24 hours, Chidambaram and Vanur recorded a maximum rainfall of 9 cm each followed by Anaikaranchatram and Kollidam which recorded 8 cm each. Pechiparai, Sathyamangalam, Papanasam, Marakkanam, recorded 7 cm each, Tiruchendur, Thenkasi, 6 cm each, Sirkali, Rsmangalam, Satankulam, 5 cm each, Manimutharu, Shencottah, Nagapattinam, Bhoothapandy, Sankarapuram, Karaikal, Cheranmahadevi, Kadaladi, Srivaikuntam, Ayikudi, and Tondi recorded 3 cm each. In addition, many other localities recorded good rainfall,’ he added.
Regarding the conditions in Chennai, the official, said, ‘In the next 24 hours, sky condition is likely to be generally cloudy. Light to moderate rain or thundershower is likely to occur in some areas. In the last 24 hours, the city recorded a maximum and minimum temperature of 31.1 and 24 degrees Celsius which is around a degree lesser than normal.’
