Chennai: Just eight hours after a boy in Pulianthope was abducted from his school, the city police arrested traced and arrested the kidnappers, a mother-daughter duo.

The arrested women worked for the boy’s family as helpers, thus befriending him. Police said the duo planned to sell the child for Rs one lakh.

Yesterday, the victim Ajay Manikandan (3) was taken from a government-run school in Pulianthope by two women. Since the child walked out of school without protest the police knew the accused were known to the family.

Based on a complaint by the boy’s father Prakash, who works for a private firm and Durga Devi at 5.30 pm, police collected CCTV footage from the school and surrounding areas and soon traced the women.

The parents who saw the footage, identified Kuttyammal (38) and her daughter and accomplice Aishwarya (22) as they had worked in the construction of the first-floor of their house at Bhogipalayam, Pulianthope. Police arrested them from Mayor Krishnamurthy Nagar, Vyasarpadi and the child was rescued from an auto nearby.

The mother-daughter duo came in contact with a woman who agreed to give them Rs one lakh for a child. As the duo was friendly with Ajay, they plotted to kidnap him.

Police sources said, ‘At 1.30 am we found the child hidden in an auto parked at Mayor Krishnamurthy Street. They gave him biscuits to eat. The child, though traumatised, is in good health. Their motive was clearly to sell the child.

The school authorities made a mistake by sending the child with the women when they said the parent’s name.’ Police said they are on the lookout for the woman who offered money for the kidnapped child.
