Chennai: The CB-CID today arrested five more persons in connection with the robbery which took place on the moving Salem-Chennai Express two years ago.
Sources said the men were produced before the Magistrate this morning. The men had robbed Rs 5.78 crores of soiled currency notes by cutting open the roof of the moving train using gas cutters when it was near Vridhachalam station on 9 August 2016.
The train was carrying a cash load of Rs 342 crores. The money was being transported by the RBI from Salem to Chennai.
Few weeks ago, CB-CID team cracked the case by arresting Dinesh Pardi (38) and Rohan Pardi (29). The duo from Madhya Pradesh had confessed to the crime and said that a five-member gang was involved in the crime. They explained that while two of them entering the train by cutting a hole on the roof, the other three waited on top.
The currencies were wrapped in lungis and thrown to gang members wrapped in lungis near Vridhachalam station. CB-CID had told that the gang members were from Pardi tribe who are mostly involved in inter-state crimes.
The gang, CB-CID said was led by one Mohar Singh of Guna district, Madhya Pradesh. Singh and few others involved in the robbery were arrested by Madhya Pradesh police in connection with few other cases and have been lodged in Guna Central Prison in Madhya Pradesh.
