Chennai: Following Madras High Court taking suo moto cognisance on HIV blood transfusion, a five-member committee started conducting the investigation at Madurai Rajaji Government Hospital today.
Speaking to News Today, Tamilnadu AIDS Control Society (TANSACS) Project Director, Dr Senthilraj said, “The report of the inquiry will be ready in two or three days and will be submitted to the Health Secretary.”
Senthilraj who was there in Madurai Thursday had spoken to the donor and receiver and has requested to provide good care and offer counselling services.
Asked about the effectiveness of tests in public and private blood banks, he stated, “It is effective which is the reason that we have not received any complaint so far and this particular incident is certainly a ‘mistake’.”
He further added that the kits are 100 per cent foolproof and of high-quality as they are supplied by government agencies.
When questioned where the setback occurred, he said, “Only the inquiry report can provide the answer.”
The Madras High Court has issued an order to submit a detailed report on the treatment offered to the pregnant woman and also sought an answer on transfusion of AIDS virus.
The incident came to light when the donor himself surrendered to the blood bank and informed that he had been contracted with HIV.
However, the blood was transfused to the pregnant woman as she was low on hemoglobin count. The dean of Madurai Rajaji GH has appointed the best doctors from the hospital to ensure she is given good care until safe delivery of the baby.
