Chennai: The Tamilnadu Congress has sent out an appeal to Makkal Tamil Maiam (MNM) founder Kamal Haasan to join the alliance that it has with the DMK for the upcoming general elections.
Speaking to a Tamil news channel this morning, Tamil Nadu Congress Committee (TNCC) president K S Alagiri said since Kamal avows secular ideology, he should join forces with the Congress-DMK alliance which supports secularism.
“This would strengthen our alliance,” said the TNCC chief.
But Kamal has been lately stating that his fledgling party will contest all the 40 Lok Sabha constituencies – 39 in Tamilnadu and 1 in Puducherry – alone, without striking up an alliance with any of the other parties of the State, for the 2019 general elections.
The MNM founder has a been a vocal critic of the BJP, which he calls communal and divisive. Though he has rubbed shoulders with CPI(M) leader and Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan, Aam Aadmi Party and Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal, and Congress president Rahul Gandhi in Delhi, the actor-politician says his party will go it alone in the 2019 general elections. He had said MNM leaders were working towards it.
