Chennai: After working on the renovation of various parks, the ongoing Pedestrian Plaza and multi-level parking facility, the Chennai Smart City Limited (CSCL), is all set to upgrade four main roads and 14 feeder streets in T Nagar, under the Smart City project.

Speaking on this development, an official of CSCL, said, “‘Four main roads such as North and South Usman Roads, Venkatanarayana and GN Chetty Road will be upgraded with facilities earmarked for the project. These streets will be pedestrian-friendly with new pavements and parking facilities to help shoppers.”‘

“Similarly, another 14 streets including Sivagnanam Street, Sivaprakasam Street, Rajabather Street, will be developed as arterial streets with features like parking lots for two and four wheelers and spacious pavements,” the official added.

According to another official of the civic body, “‘The Bhoomi pooja for the work has already been performed in streets like Venkatanarayana Road and GN Chetty Road. The construction will begin shortly.’”

To a question about providing public convenience amenities, he said, “‘We are willing to provide such a facility at important locations. The fact is that these need effective maintenance after installation. So we welcome private bodies like large establishments, to come forward and take up maintenance work.”

It is to be noted that the civic body has already commenced work on the vertical garden project at the flyover area in GN Chetty Road, which will add green cover to the traffic-prone locality.

When asked about the completion of the Pedestrian Plaza, the official noted, “Work is underway on full swing at both sides of the plaza and will be completed as planned.”
