Thiruvananthapuram: In a heinous incident, a 27-year-old woman in Kerala was allegedly starved to death by her husband and mother-in-law for dowry and the National Commission for Women (NCW) yesterday directed the Kerala Police chief to launch a probe into the issue.
The woman identified as Thushara hailed from Karunagappally in Kollam district and she passed away on 21 March. She weighed only 20 kg, due to lack of food, at the time of her death. The police arrested her husband Chandulal and his mother Geetha Lal and remanded them on Friday.
NCW Chairperson Rekha Sharma in a letter to SPC Loknath Behara wrote that the incident seriously disturbed her. woman had been meted with inhuman treatment.
“Considering the gravity of the matter, it is requested that the matter be investigated and appropriate action be taken as per relevant provision of law,” the letter was quoted saying.
