Chennai: The Greater Chennai Corporation (GCC) has finally addressed the year-old plea of Ullagaram and Vanuvampet residents to re-lay storm water drains (SWD) that run along Medavakkam Main Road, Ullagaram.

A month ago, works to re-lay SWD near Ullagaram began since the road widening works that are on at Medavakkam Main Road is nearing completion.

Authorities dug open the road recently where the SWD channel was present and have begun construction works. Over 20 workers are involved to complete the work as soon as possible.

“Once the SWD works are over, we will level the entire stretch. It will take about two months to complete the entire flow,” said an official.

“I am happy that at least now, the works to construct SWDs started. But, I want authorities to make sure that the SWDs are properly laid and covered with culverts. I also request officials to enclose the SWDs with lids,” said Kanagavel, a resident.

Other problems around:
Due to these works, motorists plying on the stretch face problems, some even meet with accidents. There are also traffic snarls at many places, say residents.

“We know the works happening at the stretch is to make the road better, but when we face multiple problems due to those works, the feeling is not good. Earlier the road was narrow, but there were traffic cops to monitor the traffic. Now, there is no police personnel even during peak hours. Atleast the GCC authorities should have put barricades at places where the works are on. But they did not,” they added.
