Chennai: Shops in Tamilnadu can now be open for 24 hours a day, according to a new government order.
The State government has announced that the move has been taken to increase productivity. To be in place for three years, the move also had clauses on increasing protection for women workers.
Implemented first in Maharashtra, the practice was also tried for a year in Tamilnadu in 2017 that saw commercial establishments work round-the-clock.
Earlier, upon posing restrictions, the government allowed full functioning of establishments such as theatres, banks and a few industries to work through the night.
