Chennai: International Society for Krishna Consciousness (ISKCON), Chennai is conducting prayers for rain in the country by performing Hare Krishna Nama Sankirtanam in different parts of city throughout this month.

In a press release, ISKCON Chennai explained the purpose for performing Hare Krishna Sankirtanam as follows: It is said in the Bhagavad-Gita (3.11), “All living bodies subsist on food grains, which are produced from rain. Rain is produced by performance of yajna [sacrifice], and yajna is born of prescribed duties.”

In the Srimad Bhagavatham it is said that in Kali-yuga the best yajna is Hari Nama Sankirtanam. Similarly, the Padma Purana says that “the chanting of the holy name of Sri Hari is the auspicious process in Kali-yuga. It is the highest auspiciousness for mankind. There is no other way. Therefore, by performing Kali-yuga dharma duty of Hari Nama Sankirtanam, we hope to please the supreme Lord and have the benediction of rain in the country,” ISKCON in the release said.

The prayer will be held at Rajagopalan Rukmini Satyabhama Koil, Bhajanai Koil Street, Ramapuram, between 4.30 pm and 8.30 pm and

Sri Veerabrahmendra Swamy Ashramam, Water Canal Road, Near DRJ Hospital, Next to Orchid Springs, Korattur, between 10 am and 1 pm on 30 June.

On 5 July, it will be held at Arulmigu Muthu Mariamman Temple, Ramasamy Salai, between 5 pm and 8 pm.
