Chennai: A man immolated himself at the corporate office of a popular Chettinad restaurant chain at Pondy Bazaar in T Nagar here, after a verbal altercation with the management last evening.
He passed away at Government Kilpauk Hospital’s burns ward this morning. According to police, the victim, Udaya Shankar (25), a native of Salem, lived in Guduvanchery and worked at various branches of the group.
It is said that he was not given his salary for the past couple of months. On Friday evening, he went to the corporate office of the restaurant chain to demand salary. There, he had an argument with a member of the management.
Following this, Udaya Shankar doused himself in petrol and set himself ablaze.
He also gripped two persons at the spot, Mageshkumar and Saravanan, who too suffered burns. The trio were rushed to Government Kilpauk Hospital, where he died this morning.
Pondy Bazzar police have registered a case and summoned the hotel’s manager, HR officer and others. Further inquiry is underway.
