Chennai: When a group of women join hands together, they are bound to make a difference. This is what drives Dreams of Sai Nagar Women (DSW), an organisation run by women and for women at Virugambakkam since 2018.
Speaking to News Today, DSW secretary Jayashree says, “The main idea was to unite all women from Sai Nagar, Virugambakkam as we were interested in doing social activities.”
She adds that the core team consisting of 13 women conducted a survey among residents to figure out the prime concerns and needs of citizens in the locality. Based on it, DSW was formed with the guidance of octogenarians S Puntitha and Vimala Rao, who are known in the neighbourhood for spearheading numerous community welfare initiatives.
Regarding work done by DSW, Jayashree says, “Dreams of Sai Nagar Women is an association formed by enterprising women of Sai Nagar. As a part of its various socio-economic-entertainment activities, we conduct various games and other events for residents.”
Last year in July, they conducted ‘Talent Hunt Event’ where they organised numerous indoor games. During the first week, competitions for carrom, chess, kallangai and pallanguzhi were held. For this month, too, DSW aims to conduct more activities. “Outdoor games have also been planned,” informs Jayashree.
“We conduct various indoor and outdoor games and talent hunt shows like handwriting, drawing competitions, to name a few. For our first-year anniversary celebrations, we aim to conduct month-long activities,” she says.
Today, DSW has over 250 members who all chip in to conduct the events. “The core team takes the responsibility to organise the events,” says Jayashree. DSW is also active in working on societal upliftment by conducting free yoga classes and taking the initiative to solve civic issues.
