Chennai: Ivan Yuen of Malaysiagot the better of India’s Mahesh Mangaonkar to clinch the men’s singles championship of the HCL-SRFI Chennai leg here on Thursday.
In the PSA Challenger Tour final, top seed Yuen registered a 7-11, 12-10, 11-6, 5-11, 11-8 victory in the summit contest that lasted an hour and 17 minutes. Mahesh, cheered on by the local crowd, started on the front foot, taking the opening game 11-7. But the 25-year-old lost his way a bit in the second and third games, losing 10-12 and 6-11 respectively. However, he won the next ser to move the game to the decisive final set where he lost 8-11 to lose the title bid.
In the women’s section, Malaysia’s Rachel Arnold defeated her compatriot Wen Li Lai 11-1, 11-4, 6-11, 11-5. This is her second successive triumph in the circuit, having emerged victorious at the Malaysia Open on home turf.
