Chennai: With rains continuing to lash several parts of Tamilnadu, isolated places in the State and Puducherry are likely to receive heavy to very heavy rains for two days, including today.
The Indian Meteorological Department stated that the low pressure in the coast along Kannyakumari turned into low depression zone, due to which the wind will blow at the rate of 50-60 km.
Further, the Regional Metereological Department stated that the low pressure in Thiruvananthapuram is likely to turn into a cyclone. In view of which, fishermen belonging to Kanyakumari coast are warned not to venture into the sea.
According to television reports, 120 fishermen from Kannyakumari have gone missing and the relatives have asked the State government to take measures to rescue them.
It is stated that they had gone to fish 15 days ago and following the low pressure formation in Arabian sea, many reached neighbouring States, however, 120 of them are found missing.
”The National and Disaster Response Force are ready as rains are predicted over South Tamilnadu. Five of two boats with fishermen in the sea are in contact with the government,” said Revenue Department Principal Secretary J Radhakrishnan.
A statement issued by the Regional Meteorological Centre, Chennai, said, isolated places in Kanyakumari, Tirunelveli, Thoothukudi, Ramanathapuram, Virudhunagar, Madurai, Sivagangai, Pudukottai, Thanjavur, Tiruvarur, Nagapattinam, Cuddalore, Villupuram, Tiruvannamalai, Kanchipuram, Ariyalur, Tiruvallur, Vellore, Krishnagiri and Dharmapuri districts are likely to receive heavy to very heavy rainfall. Most places in South Tamilnadu and many places over North Tamilnadu are likely to receive light to moderate rain.
Meanwhile, schools in Madurai, Ramanathapuram, Virudhunagar and Theni and educational institutions in Sivaganga, Tirunelveli, Thoothukudi, Vellore, Dindigul and Kodaikkanal have been declared holiday.
Students suffered in Dindigul as the holiday announcement came late and they reportedly had already reached the school.
The Met centre has also notified that light to moderate thunderstorms with lightning will occur at isolated places over Tamilnadu. The State has received a yellow warning.
Meanwhile in Chennai, the causeway between Thiruneermalai and Thirumudivakkam damaged and the commuters bore the brunt. Heavy rain lashed Porur, Ashok Nagar, Valasaravakkam, Ekkaduthangal, Guindy, Meenambakkam and several parts continue receiving heavy downpour from this morning. It led to road blocks in several parts of the city and traffic came to a standstill.
In Chennai, the department stated, ”The sky condition is likely to be generally cloudy. Light to moderate rain/thundershower is likely to occur in some areas.”
