Chennai: High tides were reported at Marina beach in the city and in districts like Cuddalore due to the impact of the cyclonic storm Amphan.
Fishermen were also advised not to venture into the sea for fishing as the sea conditions would be rough.
Strong winds with speed reaching 40-50 kmph is likely to prevail over south Bay of Bengal, Comorin area and Gulf of Mannar.
High waves in the range of 3.0-4.6 meters were forecast till tonight along the Northern Tamilnadu coast from Point Calimer to Pulicat. Fishermen are advised not to venture into the sea.
Met office said distant Warning Signal Number two with section signal Number two was hoisted at Chennai, Cuddalore and Nagapattinam ports and Distant Warning Signal Number 2 hoisted at Ennore, Kattupalli and Puducherry ports.
