Chennai: Concerned over the injuries caused by flying kites using manja threads, the Chennai city police has said Goondas Act would be slapped against those using such threads. Also, special teams have been formed to take action against those who fly kits using manja.
Greater Chennai Police Commissioner A K Viswanathan said 80 persons have so far been arrested for flying kites with the banned manja thread.
Last March, Viswanathan had promulgated an order under the Criminal Procedure Code prohibiting use/sale/manufacture/storage/ import of manja thread for the purpose of flying kite in the city, following a series of injury incidents.
A couple of days ago, a 35-year-old woman sustained injures near her eyes after she was allegedly slit by a glass-coated thread at the Kodambakkam bridge.
Recently, the Thiru Vi Ka Nagar police arrested 10 people for manufacturing and selling prohibited manja thread for flying kites and seized large quantity of manja thread and kites from them.
