Chennai: After two days of treatment, a ten-year-old male elephant, aged between 8 and 10, which was found with injuries in the mouth, succumbed at a farm land at Anaikatti near Coimbatore district.
Police and Forest officials said the pachyderm, which was found with mouth injuries on Friday, died without responding to treatment.
Officials suspect that the elephant might have suffered the mouth injuries after biting a country made bomb kept by farmers to kill crop-raiding wild boars.
Forest department officials had on Saturday received information that a weak wild elephant was standing in an agricultural land on forest fringes at Anaikatti and that it was not able to eat.
The officials rushed to the spot started treatment by giving medicines kept inside fruits. Fluids were also administered to it.
On Sunday, it managed to walk and entered the forest. But it returned to the farm land again. As it could not walk further, it was found lying on the ground.
It died on Monday without responding to the treatment, forest department officials said.
According to officials, elephants might not be able to take proper feed when they are in molar progression stage–the generation of cheek teeth in replacement of worn out ones.
