Chennai: Based on intelligence that gold was likely to be smuggled from Dubai, two cases of gold smuggling were detected at the Chennai airport on Monday.
In first case, one Syed Mohamed Buhari, 51, of Sivaganga, who arrived from Dubai, was intercepted at exit. On persistent questioning he confessed of carrying gold paste in rectum. On personal search two gold paste bundles were recovered from rectum.
Total 484 grams of gold valued at Rs 25.5 lakh was recovered after extraction and same was seized. The passenger has been arrested.
In second case, one Syed Ali, 39, of Ramanathapuram who arrived from Dubai was intercepted at exit and on persistent questioning he confessed to concealing gold paste bundles in rectum. On personal search four bundles were recovered from rectum and after extraction 358 grams of gold valued at Rs 18.9 lakh was recovered and seized.
Total 842 grams gold of 24 K purity valued at Rs 44.4 lakh was seized under Customs Act 1962. Further investigation was under progress, according to a press release by Commissioner of Customs, Chennai International Airport.
