Chennai: The involvement of a person cited as an accused in the 2014 Chennai Central Railway Station bomb blast case, came to the fore when he was arrested by the city police in connection with a robbery case.
Little the city police would have realised that when they arrested S Rafiq alias Noorudhin alias Ismail (37) in connection with the robbery case, he was one of the accused in the bomb blast case.
The police, probing the waylaying and robbery of 282 gms gold and 7.5 lakh cash by a bike-borne gang from a city based-jeweller early this month arrested one Sabiyullas.
Based on the information provided by him, police came to know about the involvement of Rafiq also in the robbery, following which he was arrested from his hide out.
The gold jewellery, a car and a bike were seized from him. When police took Rafiq into their custody for a detailed interrogation, his involvement in the bomb blast case came to light.
Police said Rafiq was facing 10 criminal cases for fraud and a non-bailable warrant was also pending against him in connection with the bomb blast case. It is suspected that he has terror links and a detailed investigation has been launched.
It may be recalled that two low intensity bombs exploded in the early hours of 1 May, 2014 in the Bangalore-Guwahati express when it arrived at the Chennai Central railway station, in which a woman passenger was killed and nearly 14 others were injured. The case was being probed by the CB-CID, who were informed about his arrest.
