After weeks, public travel in Chennai suburban trains

Chennai: From this morning, members of the public were allowed to travel on suburban trains in Chennai. Prior to this, only staff in essential services were allowed to travel in workmen special trains.

In view of the Covid-19 lockdown easing in Tamilnadu, the Southern Railways has announced that the Chennai Suburban train system will restart in limited capacity from today.

The announcement has been made as per the State government lockdown guidelines issued recently.

Southern Railway said it would be permitting women passengers to travel round the clock, while male commuters not working in government, private or other offices would be allowed to travel only during non-peak hours. Children below 12 years of age would be allowed to travel only when accompanied by women passengers.

Peak hours have been designated from 7 am to 9.30 am and 4.30 pm to 7 pm. Staff of State/Central Governments, PSUs, High Court and other courts, staff of private sector and other sectors will be allowed to travel on the suburban trains with permission letter and ID proof. Passengers of this category will be permitted to travel round the clock. They will be issued single or return tickets and even seasonal tickets as per requirement.
