TN Assembly polls to be held in 2024 along with LS elections?

Chennai: Comments made by AIADMK joint coordinator and Leader of Opposition Edappadi K Palaniswami, that there is a possibility for the Assembly elections in Tamilnadu to be held simultaneously with Lok Sabha polls under ‘One Nation, One Election’ in 2024, have triggered speculations in the State political arena.

It is said that Palaniswami, who shares a good rapport with the BJP high command and whose party is in alliance with the BJP, might have reflected the mood of ‘Delhi’ during his interaction with the media in Salem on Wednesday.

However, if the Centre goes ahead with the ‘One Nation, One Election’ idea, it is likely to be opposed by parties including the ruling DMK in Tamilnadu, which has just come to power after a decade.

Speaking to reporters in Salem on Wednesday, Palaniswami said that as there is a possibility for an increase in the number of MPs, the MLAs too may go up.

He added: ‘The new Parliament building coming up in Delhi has a seating capacity of 1,000 MPs. So, with the number of MPs likely to increase, there is also a possibility for MLAs to go up. Also, the Assembly polls may come along with the Lok Sabha polls in 2024.’
