Storming operation against rowdies continues

Chennai: The storming operation launched by the Tamilnadu police will continue, sources said and added that it has been decided to conduct such drives at frequent intervals.

The Tamilnadu Police launched a massive storming operation across the State and arrested at least 560 rowdies, including 70 history sheeter in Chennai city, and seized over 250 weapons, besides narcotic drugs like ganja from them.

The storming operation, aimed at bringing down the crime rate in the wake of increase in incidents of theft, was launched on the orders of Director General Police C Sylendra Babu.

During the 48-hour simultaneous crackdown, which commenced Thursday night at the residences of history-sheeters, 560 rowdies were arrested across the State till Friday and the operation is continuing.

Those arrested were criminals, anti-social elements, those who evaded bail orders, wanted criminals, absconding accused and those against whom Non-bailable Warrants are pending.

In Chennai, the raids were conducted at 700 houses of rwodies and more than 70, who were involved in various offences, were arrested.

During the raids, 256 weapons, including sickles, knives and three country-made guns were seized, in various districts.

Talking to reporters, Greater Chennai City Police Commissioner Shankar Jiwal said a series of steps have been taken to ensure the city is free of rowdies.

The city police have launched a 48-hour storming operation in the city on the orders of the DGP after a couple of beheading incidents were reported in the State.

Jiwal said, ‘from Thursday, we have been conducting a storming operation for 48 hours. The city police has a list of 6,000 rowdies. Until 7 a.m today, 717 of them were intercepted and verified. Of these, 57 history-sheeters and 13 others who were involved in other criminal cases were arrested’.
