New Delhi: The Supreme Court has taken suo motu cognizance of the violence that claimed eight lives in Uttar Pradesh’s Lakhimpur Kheri on Sunday.

A bench comprising Justices Sanjay Kishan Kaul and MM Sundresh ordered the registration of the suo motu case, after noting that the suggestions given by the Allahabad High Court in its affidavit are ‘cumbersome’.

As per the supplementary cause list of the apex court, the matter has been registered as ‘In Re violence in Lakhimpur Kheri leading to loss of life’, has been registered ‘by court’s motion’ in the category ‘Latter Petition and PIL Matters’ and will come up for admission hearing before a bench of Chief Justice N V Ramana and Justices Surya Kant and Hima Kohli today.

Earlier this week, the Uttar Pradesh government had initiated a judicial probe into the matter headed by a retired High Court judge.

The incident took place during a protest by local farmers who had planned to show black flags to UP Deputy Chief Minister Keshav Prasad Maurya.

Four farmers died after they were allegedly run over by a car that was part of the convoy of Ashish Misra, the son of Ajay Misra, Union Minister of State for Home Affairs.
