Chennai: The Directorate of Vigilance and Anti-Corruption (DVAC) held searches at former Chief Minister Edappadi K Palaniswami’s aide R.Elangovan’s premises which led to the discovery of Rs 29.77 lakh in cash, 10 luxury cars (including a Cooper and an Audi), two Volvo buses, three computer hard discs, 21.2 kgs of gold jewels, 282.383 kgs of silver articles, bank passbooks, property documents and bank deposits Rs 68 lakh.

Cases were registered against the AIADMK leader for amassing wealth to the tune of Rs.3.78 crore against his known sources of income, police said.

Elangovan, a resident of Puthiragoundenpalayam in Athur is the Salem district secretary of Jayalalithaa Peravai.

According to the FIR registered by the Salem unit of DVAC, Elangovan, who was elected as the chairman of the Tamilnadu State Apex Co-operative Bank and president of Salem District Central Cooperative Bank twice in 2013 and 2018, has amassed illegal assets worth Rs 3.78 crore.

Searches were carried out at nearly 20 places across Tamilnadu, including Chennai, and Tiruchirapalli. Elangovan’s house in Salem, farm and an agricultural college in Thuraiyur were also raided.
