Chennai: Fresh Covid-19 infections continued to rise in Tamilnadu with another 6,983 persons testing positive on Thursday, pushing up the total number of infected to 27,67,432.
With 11 deaths, the toll reached 36,825. As many as 721 patients were discharged in the last 24 hours, leaving 22,828 active cases. The positivity rate stood at 5.42 per cent.
As many as eight districts, including the State capital accounted for the majority of new infections, which have been on an upward trend over the last few days.
Chennai led the spike by reporting 3,759 new infections as against 2,481 on Wednesday and 1,489 on Tuesday.
In the neighbouring Chengalpattu district, the number of new cases was 816, while in Coimbatore it was 309; in Tiruvallur 444 and in Kancheepuram 185, according to State government data.
In the 4,719 sessions held across the State to administer Covid-19 vaccines, 6,94,968 persons got the jab, including 17 healthcare and 150 frontline workers.
The Union Territory of Puducherry also witnessed a jump in the number of fresh coronavirus cases, with 129 being added in the last 24 hours.
