India suffered a heartwrenching loss to Australia in the semi-final of women’s hockey on Friday. Australia scored the opener in the first quarter but India fought well to not concede any goal later. In the fourth quarter, India bounced back to level the scores and take the match to penalty shootout. However, in the latter part of the game they were Australia who thoroughly dominated with a 3-0 advantage and sealed the game as soon as India failed to convert any of their first three chances into a goal. The Savita Punia-led side had earlier finished at the second spot in Pool A with nine points from four games to advance to the semi-final, while the Australian team had finished as the topper of Pool B. They remain unbeaten in the tournament with their thrilling win over India in semi-finals. Australia will now face England in the final of the event.
