At the Guru Pooja of Swami Nandanar event organised by Tamil Seva Sangam in Kumbakonam, Governor RN Ravi expressed deep concern over the alleged increase in caste atrocities within the State. He highlighted disturbing incidents, including the assault of a 12-year-old Dalit student in Tirunelveli’s Nanguneri and the contamination of drinking water supplied to a Dalit colony in Pudukottai district with faeces. These incidents, he emphasized, point to a distressing trend of caste-based violence and discrimination.
RN Ravi lamented that while cases of caste discrimination persist across the country, Tamil Nadu has witnessed a notable surge in such atrocities. He underscored that this alarming rise deserves serious attention and action.
One particularly distressing incident the Governor referenced was parents refusing to allow their children to consume food prepared by Dalits during mid-day meals in schools. He characterized this as a worrisome sign of cultural degradation unique to Tamil Nadu, saying, “It is only in Tamil Nadu that I am hearing about people not allowing children to eat food cooked by a Dalit.”
