Chennai: In the wake of recent criticisms leveled against the Hindu Religious and Charitable Endowments department (HR&CE), Minister PK Sekar Babu has vehemently defended the department, denouncing what he claims are deliberate attempts to tarnish the government’s image.

The minister’s response was prompted by concerns raised by Nirmala Sitharaman regarding irregularities in the functioning of temples under the HR&CE department. Minister Babu asserted that such criticisms are baseless and suggested that individuals in high offices should refrain from making irresponsible statements without proper scrutiny.

Highlighting the department’s accomplishments, Minister Babu emphasized the proactive measures taken to enhance security and transparency. He revealed that CCTV cameras have been strategically installed in 48 major temples, contributing to heightened surveillance. Moreover, thousands of temples have undergone consecrations, demonstrating the department’s commitment to preserving and promoting religious sanctity.

Addressing concerns about safety during religious events, Minister Babu cited the recently concluded Soorasamharam festival in Thiruchendur as a testament to the department’s efforts. He noted that despite the large gatherings, not a single crime incident or chain-snatching incident was reported, underscoring the success of the implemented security measures.
