Commuters in Chennai will have to endure an extended wait for the resumption of Mass Rapid Transit System (MRTS) services between Chennai Beach and Chintadaripet stations, as Southern Railway officials have announced a further delay in the restoration of these crucial rail links. The suspension of services, initially implemented in August 2023 to facilitate the construction of a 4.1km fourth line between Chennai Beach and Egmore stations, was expected to conclude this month (March 2024). However, officials now confirm that services will remain suspended until June 2024, adding an additional four months to the hiatus.
The decision to extend the suspension period comes as a setback for commuters who have been eagerly awaiting the restoration of MRTS services along this vital corridor. Originally, the completion of the fourth line was anticipated to coincide with the resumption of train operations between Chennai Beach and Chintadaripet stations. However, delays in the construction process have led to the postponement of the restoration timeline, leaving commuters without access to this key transportation route for an extended period.
During a briefing session held at the Southern Railway zonal headquarters, officials acknowledged the delay and expressed uncertainty regarding the timely completion of the fourth line by the revised deadline in June. The Southern Railway Heads of Departments emphasized the importance of prioritizing safety and quality in construction efforts, which may contribute to the extended timeline for project completion.
