The Vellore Institute of Technology (VIT) Chennai campus inaugurated its month-long freshers’ induction programme on Thursday, welcoming new students enrolled in various undergraduate courses, including Computer Science, Economics, Fashion Design, Law, Management, and Commerce.

During the inauguration event, VIT founder and chancellor G Viswanathan emphasized the critical need for increased educational spending in India. He stated, “India ranks 155th out of 198 countries in educational spending, and only education can advance a country.” Viswanathan highlighted the unfulfilled demand for allocating 6 percent of the country’s GDP to education.

The event’s chief guest, V Iraianbu, former chief secretary of Tamil Nadu, addressed the importance of discipline, communication, and listening skills in every student’s career. He also stressed the wise use of technology in modern education.

Viswanathan proudly announced that students from 31 states and union territories are enrolled at VIT Chennai, and the institute saw 947 companies participating in this year’s placement drives. He added that 90 percent of students from the Engineering department secured placements, reflecting the institute’s strong industry connections and successful career outcomes for its students.

Earlier, the freshers’ induction programme for the two-year postgraduate Engineering courses featured addresses by Tamil Nadu’s chief information commissioner Shakeel Akhter and director of GE Healthcare Chittibabu. They provided valuable insights and guidance to the new students.

The Freshers’ Induction Programme for undergraduate students will continue throughout the month, with sessions aimed at helping students acclimate to campus life and prepare for their academic journeys. The induction for engineering students is scheduled from July 22 to July 26, featuring a series of events and activities designed to integrate new students into the VIT community.
