In a significant development for farmers in the delta districts, Minister for Municipal Administration, Urban and Water Supply KN Nehru released water from the Mettur Dam on Sunday to aid irrigation efforts. This decision comes after an initial delay caused by insufficient storage levels in the reservoir, which prevented the customary release on June 12 for the ‘kuruvai’ (short-term) cultivation season. The situation took a positive turn due to an intense southwest monsoon that brought heavy rainfall to the catchment areas in Karnataka. The increased rainfall led to a substantial inflow of water, with the reservoir receiving over 1.50 lakh cusecs (cubic feet per second) on Sunday. Consequently, the storage level at Mettur Dam surged to 109.20 feet, approaching its full reservoir level (FRL) of 120 feet.
Chief Minister MK Stalin responded swiftly to the improved water situation by convening a meeting with district collectors from the delta region and officials from the Public Works Department (PWD). During the meeting, he directed the release of 12,000 cusecs of water from the reservoir. The primary goal of this release is to support the irrigation of ‘kuruvai’ crops, which are vital for the region’s agricultural output.
Additionally, the release of water is expected to enhance the celebration of the ‘Aadiperukku’ festival, a significant event for the local communities, allowing them to observe the festivities with greater enthusiasm.
The release of water from the Mettur Dam marks a crucial step in securing the agricultural needs of the delta districts, ensuring that farmers have the necessary resources to cultivate their crops and support the region’s economy.
