Pudhuchery, Aug 1: The All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (AIADMK) has called on the Puducherry government to significantly increase the allocation for capital expenditure in the upcoming budget. Party secretary A. Anbalagan submitted a memorandum to Chief Minister N. Rangasamy on Tuesday, urging that 15% of the total budgetary outlay be dedicated to capital projects.
Anbalagan emphasized the need for increased capital expenditure, highlighting that in previous years, only around 6% of the budget was allocated for such investments. “The Chief Minister will be presenting the Budget on August 2. In the past, only around 6% of the outlay was utilised for capital expenditure. It should be increased to 15% for overall development of the Union Territory,” he stated. He argued that a higher allocation would not only spur infrastructure development but also create new employment opportunities for the people of Puducherry.
The AIADMK leader outlined several areas where the increased funds could be effectively utilized. He suggested that a significant portion of the budget be directed towards improving road infrastructure, constructing new bridges, and building Anganwadis and government offices. Anbalagan also recommended that the government announce measures to establish an IT Park on the premises of the AFT mill complex, which he believes would be a strategic move to boost the local economy and provide jobs.
The AIADMK’s push for higher capital expenditure comes at a time when Puducherry is looking to accelerate its development trajectory. By increasing investment in infrastructure and other key sectors, Anbalagan believes the Union Territory can achieve more balanced growth and improve the quality of life for its residents.
The proposal is expected to be considered as the Chief Minister prepares to present the budget, with the hope that the government will take these suggestions into account to address the region’s development needs more effectively.
