The Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) has announced that it will honor several distinguished individuals, including veteran party MP S. Jagathrakshakan and 108-year-old organic farmer Padmashri Pappammal, during the upcoming Mupperum Vizha on September 17.S. Jagathrakshakan, the DMK’s Arakkonam MP and a prominent businessman, will be presented with the prestigious Kalaignar Award. Known for his long-standing association with the party, Jagathrakshakan’s contributions to both business and politics have been recognized with this high honor.
Padmashri Pappammal, a centenarian who has been a pioneer in organic farming, will be bestowed with the Periyar Award. Her remarkable dedication to sustainable agriculture and her role as an inspiration to many in the farming community have earned her this significant accolade.
The Anna Award will be given to Aranthangi ‘MISA’ Ramanathan, a long-time DMK functionary and author of numerous books on ‘Arignar’ Anna. Ramanathan was also jailed under the Maintenance of Internal Security Act (MISA) during the Emergency, reflecting his steadfast commitment to the partyās ideals.
In addition, the Pavendar Award will be presented to ‘Kavignar’ Tamizhdasan, a DMK spokesperson and prolific author, while former DMK MLA V.P. Rajan will receive the Perasiriyar Award. Rajan served as a member of the Tamil Nadu Legislative Assembly, representing the Rajapalayam constituency in 1989 and 1996.
The Mupperum Vizha, an annual event of great significance for the DMK, commemorates three important occasions: the birth anniversaries of social reformer Periyar and DMK founder C.N. Annadurai (both celebrated on September 15), and the foundation day of the DMK. This year’s event will take place on September 17 at the YMCA grounds in Nandanam, Chennai.
DMK President and Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M.K. Stalin will personally present the awards during the ceremony, which is expected to be a grand celebration of the party’s legacy and its contributions to Tamil society.
