What was meant to be a celebratory display of India’s air prowess turned into a tragedy on Sunday, as five spectators lost their lives and over 200 were hospitalized following an Indian Air Force (IAF) air show at Marina Beach. The event, held to mark the 92nd anniversary of the IAF, has ignited a wave of public outrage, with many citizens venting their frustration over the lack of basic amenities and poor crowd management in sweltering conditions.

I saw several people collapse, and yet there was no public announcement or guidance on what to do,” said Priya Ramachandran, another attendee who left the event early with her two young children.

Several attendees also expressed their frustration over the lack of proper planning for such a large event, particularly in terms of traffic management.

“We were stuck in traffic for hours. By the time we reached the venue, the air show had already started, and there was no place to park. Even after the show, it took us nearly three hours to get back home. There were no proper transport arrangements, and the roads were completely gridlocked,” said Suresh Babu, a software professional from the city.

Public anger was further fueled by the tragic loss of lives, with
