Chennai’s markets are ablaze with the colors of love as Valentine’s Day approaches. Roses, the quintessential symbol of romance, have taken center stage, with vendors across the city witnessing a surge in demand. However, along with the festive spirit, prices have also seen a notable rise.At Koyambedu flower market, traders are busy stacking fresh bundles of red, pink, and white roses, catering to couples eager to express their love. “Every year, the demand peaks around this time. This year, prices have gone up slightly due to transportation costs and seasonal supply,” says S. Karthik, a wholesale flower seller.
Despite the higher prices, buyers are not hesitating. “Valentine’s Day comes once a year, and flowers are a must! A little extra cost doesn’t matter when it’s about love,” smiles Ramesh Kumar, a college student picking up a bouquet for his fiancée.
While roses remain the favorite, florists are also seeing demand for mixed floral arrangements, heart-shaped bouquets, and even customized gift hampers. “Customers are getting creative. Some want roses with chocolates, some prefer orchids and lilies mixed in. It’s all about making the day special,” explains florist Meena at T. Nagar.
With love in the air, the city is set to witness a day filled with romantic gestures, heartfelt proposals, and countless roses exchanged between loved ones. As poet Rumi once said, “The rose’s rarest essence lives in the thorn.” This Valentine’s Day, love is blossoming, even if it comes at a slightly higher price.
