With the summer holidays in full swing, Chennai is witnessing a surge in sports camps across the city, offering students an energetic and engaging break from academics. From cricket and football to swimming, badminton, and even newer sports like roller skating and archery, a wide array of camps are catering to young enthusiasts looking to stay active and learn new skills.
“Parents are keen on keeping their children away from screens and helping them build discipline and fitness,” said Raghavan, a football coach at a summer camp in Anna Nagar. “We’ve seen almost double the enrolment this year compared to last year.”
Several schools and academies have opened their grounds for these camps, with sessions held early in the morning or late in the evening to beat the heat. For many parents, it’s a welcome opportunity. “My son wakes up excited every day for cricket camp,” said Kavitha Suresh, a parent from Velachery. “He’s not only learning technique but also teamwork and time management.”
Organizers say this boom in sports camps reflects a larger shift in how summer vacations are being approached. “It’s not just about beating boredom anymore,” said Arun Prasad, who runs a multi-sport camp in T Nagar. “Children want to explore different sports, and some even consider pursuing them seriously.”
With Chennai’s vibrant sports culture and increasing awareness about fitness, summer sports camps are quickly becoming the city’s new vacation trend — blending fun, focus, and fitness all in one.
