In a landmark development for Chennai’s suburban rail commuters, the city’s first air-conditioned EMU (Electric Multiple Unit) service was launched today, bringing much-needed relief from the scorching summer heat. The Southern Railway officially flagged off the modern train service this morning at 7:00 am from Chennai Beach station to Chengalpattu.
Marking a new era of comfort and convenience for suburban passengers, the fully air-conditioned EMU is equipped with features like automatic doors, CCTV surveillance, digital passenger information systems, and clearly marked entry/exit points. This is a significant upgrade for Chennai’s suburban transit network, which has long been associated with crowded, non-air-conditioned coaches.
The inaugural train will halt at 15 key stations, including Chennai Fort, Park, Egmore, Mambalam, Guindy, St. Thomas Mount, Tambaram, Perungalathur, Guduvancheri, Singaperumal Koil, and finally Chengalpattu, reaching the destination at 8:30 am. The return service departs Chengalpattu at 9:00 am, reaching Chennai Beach by 10:30 am.
From now on, three pairs of a/c EMUs will operate daily (except Sundays) between Chennai Beach and Chengalpattu. Afternoon and evening services are also scheduled:
Train No. 49005 departs Chennai Beach at 3:45 pm and reaches Chengalpattu at 5:25 pm
Train No. 49006 returns at 5:45 pm, reaching Chennai Beach at 7:15 pm
Train No. 49001, the last a/c EMU of the day, will run between Chennai Beach and Tambaram, departing at 7:35 pm and arriving at 8:30 pm
Starting April 21, an additional morning service, Train No. 49002, will begin operations from Tambaram at 5:40 am, reaching Chennai Beach by 6:45 am. This train, along with Train No. 49001, will run on the suburban line, while others will use the mainline route.
The fare structure follows the Mumbai a/c EMU model, as per a Railway Board circular issued in April 2022. The minimum fare is Rs 29 for the first 10 km, Rs 37 for 11–15 km, and Rs 56 for journeys up to 25 km, offering a cost-effective and comfortable commuting option for thousands of daily passengers.
With the introduction of this modern fleet, Chennai joins the ranks of cities offering a premium suburban travel experience. Regular commuters are expected to benefit immensely, especially during peak summer months.
